Thank you for helping us design Halton Hills Drive Parkette!
The Final Concept is now complete and construction will start later this year.
This is the final portion of our public consultation process, allowing us to share the final design for Halton Hills Drive Parkette.
The final design builds off of the preferred concept and addresses the prevalent themes that were identified throughout our public consultation, which included;
A natural playground
Fitness features
An overlook along the hill with lounge seating
Enhanced protection to memorialize the existing cemetery
Multiple rest areas with armor stone and backed metal benches
Natural buffer zones along park edges.
Pathway lighting
Below are additional details on the main features included in the final design:
Natural Playground: Through the first round of public consultation there was a strong interest for a natural playground to be included as part of the preferred concept. A design has been developed, offering a variety of play features including; net climber, plate spinner, hill slide using the surrounding topography of the site, spring toys, xylophone panel, log climber, saucer swing and small play house. The surfacing for this area will be engineered wood fiber, which is the Town standard and meets the CSA safety requirements for fall height and accessibility.
Fitness Feature: A small fitness zone will offer additional features for multi-generational users of the park. Push up and pull up bars as well as bench fit exercises throughout the site. Instructional signage will be installed in conjunction with the equipment to demonstrate a variety of exercises and intensities for working out.
3. Walkway: A concrete walkway connection between Humberstone Drive and Halton Hills Drive, the connection directly from Halton Hills Drive to the overlook, will have some steeper slopes sections due to the natural terrain within the park, however the upper access off Humberstone and the top loop will be a more comfortable slope.
4. Trees: A mix of native coniferous and deciduous trees will be planted in strategic locations throughout the park. The trees will provide shade to users, additional buffering to adjacent properties and help to naturalize the park.
Seating : Multiple seating options will be available within the park, including formal benches, lounge seats and armourstone.
Overlook : An overlook will be located along the top of the hill seen from Halton Hills Drive, with views to the woodlot beyond and road below, this area will have permanent lounge seating.
Naturalization: Existing vegetative buffer area in the park will be maintained as the naturalize edge to soften the park and provide a buffer from the surrounding neighbours. The hillside along Halton Hills Drive will be maintained as meadow area. Grass in this area will have little annual maintenance and will not receive regular grass cutting, allowing the landscape to naturalize and soften the edges of the park and reinforce its picturesque character.
Existing Pioneer Cemetery : The existing cemetery, located centrally within the park, will not be disturbed. The design delineates the cemetery area, creating it as an open grass area for reflection. The cemetery will have a tree lined perimeter with stone corner markers. A bench will be installed at the edge of the cemetery to provide a focal point for reflection and a plaque acknowledging the history of the cemetery.
Pathway Lighting : The park will have 5 lights within the park stretching from Halton Hills Drive to Humberstone Drive.
Implementation of the design will transform this 0.45 hectare space into a high quality parkette that promotes active living in a healthy, safe, inclusive, and sustainable environment.
What we heard from you!
The first public consultation for this project took place in December 2023, with a second round in March 2024 we heard the following themes from the community:
Feedback leaned towards a more organic layout with natural elements.
The majority would like to see a playground within the park, specifically a natural type playground.
High support for incorporating a natural native buffer within the park and maintaining existing trees.
Community desires ample seating options throughout the park.
There was a high interest in fitness features, specifically push up, pull up bars and bench fit.
The concept of a terrace or overlook positioned along the ridge, providing views overlooking Halton Hills Drive was favoured.
Concerns and uncertainty were raised regarding the existing pioneer cemetery within the park. The pioneer cemetery will remain protected, and sensitively integrated with the park design to ensure meaningful commemoration.
Please note:
The size of the site, existing terrain and the budget influenced how the final concept design was created.
There is an existing European settler pioneer cemetery within the park site. It remains undisturbed and will be preserved through the park development process. Commemorative features for the pioneer cemetery will be developed as part of the design.
What's next?
Construction will be ongoing through summer with completion anticipated for fall 2024.
