Library & Cultural Centre Plaza - Final Design
The design of the Library & Cultural Centre Plaza has been finalized.
The Recreation & Parks Department would like to thank you for the abundant input we received through public consultation.
Consultation identified the following themes, interests and recommendations for the development of the final design:
Design and layout comments:
- Brings people to downtown
- Good balance of open space and seating
- Makes space usable and provides much needed public space
- Focus on native, pollinator plant species
- Create open ended programming opportunities
- Removes existing grassed area from downtown
- Remove existing mature tree
- Parking and traffic may become a problem in the future
- Shade and sun exposure need to be considered
Usage and programming comments;
- For anything
- Encourage all-season use
- Art exhibits
- Summer camps
- Place to gather/hang out
- General celebrations
- Cultural events
- Library programming
- Farmers Market
Community feedback is one factor in guiding the final design. As we finalized the design we also considered:
- Alignment with other plans and strategies (e.g. Public Art Master Plan, Climate Change Adaption Plan)
- Overall community benefit
- Environmental sustainability
- Technical considerations and operating impacts
- Financial sustainability
Our anticipated timeline is to begin construction fall 2020 and complete all major features and paving. Planting will be completed in spring 2021.
Thank you again for your continued support and feedback throughout this process.
