The Town of Halton Hills is reviewing potential traffic calming improvements for the McKenzie-Smith Bennett School neighbourhood. The study area can be seen in the document section.

Over the last few years, an operational safety review was undertaken to assess the need for traffic calming measures within the McKenzie-Smith Bennett School neighbourhood. The review was initiated due to multiple residential concerns regarding aggressive driving and road safety. A proposed traffic calming plan has been created to further ensure safety for all road users.

The virtual PIC presentation can be viewed on the McKenzie-Smith Bennett School neighbourhood project page within the Town’s “Let’s Talk Halton Hills” platform. Residents can evaluate the proposed Traffic Calming Plan and provide input using the interactive display materials.

Residents are encouraged to watch the online PIC presentation to review the proposed Traffic Calming Plan. Feedback will be accepted until December 20th, 2024 and can be provided using the Question and Comments tool.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. Learn how to file a Road Watch Report and Traffic Concern Report to the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) and help keep our roads safe.

  • Share As a resident of Arthur st for over the past 8 years I can honestly say there needs to be speed bumps on Arthur st , cars come off # 7 and come flying down Arthur st at speeds over 60km . Morning school time is also particularly bad as cars are rushing to get to the school , as well as school buses . The 40 km zone signs where an effort but unfortunately people disregard these .. I know the speed bumps implemented near the curling club and Acton High school work very well and this system implemented on Arthur would be very beneficial in avoiding a speeding mishap or tragedy on Arthur St . I think with the increase of the volume of traffic over the years , I know myself this was starting to be a concern and I had mentioned it to fellow neighbours for their perspectives and the consensus seemed to be mutual , so it was a very nice surprise to learn about this project , it couldn’t have come at a better time ! on Facebook Share As a resident of Arthur st for over the past 8 years I can honestly say there needs to be speed bumps on Arthur st , cars come off # 7 and come flying down Arthur st at speeds over 60km . • Share Great job with the Taffic calming at MSB. i missed the in-person meeting, although, I had a concern to add to school zone safety. There is no cross walk on the west side of the School on Young Street which travels pass Mill, Arthur, and Peel St. I watch kids and parents coming from that side of Town having to cross the busy street by running across when there is no traffic. Sometimes they wait for 3-5 minutes to cross. I live on the corner and my office window faces Young Street. Every school day, I watch people taking that 'run across the road'. Safety first! The older kids take chances and dodge across. A crosswalk added there would cut down on speeding down Young Street and force traffic to yield when coming around that corner where Queen Street turns into Young Street. The only other crosswalks are at Acton Blvd. and one way down Main Street by the Medical office. A crosswalk at the Corner of Young and Peel Street would be ideal. It would also be great for commuters who use the Go Train. It's either 'play frogger' to cross Young St. or walk all the way to Queen St/Acton Blvd. or down Main Street to cross the road to go to the school. Happy you are putting speed bumps in. That is awesome. Cheers. on Facebook Share Great job with the Taffic calming at MSB. i missed the in-person meeting, although, I had a concern to add to school zone safety. Thank you for your comments and for sharing that information with us.

Currently, there are no pedestrian facilities on the west side of Young Street, which means a crosswalk cannot be installed.

To address this, staff will coordinate with the schools to send out a message to parents and children, advising them to use the designated crosswalks.

    Regards,

  • Share I am a school crossing guard at Mill & Acton Blvd in front of MSB. Something I see as dangerous is how close vehicles are allowed to park at the crosswalk in front of the school. They block the vision of people entering the crosswalk from the MSB side. People have a tendency to push the button & just head across assuming traffic will stop because they have pushed the button. Those flashing lights are not very bright when activated & because a vehicle is parked almost to the crosswalk they hide pedestrians heading across. I have seen several close calls at that crosswalk as it is not far from my location. on Facebook Share I am a school crossing guard at Mill & Acton Blvd in front of MSB. Thank you for taking the time to review the proposed plan.

Regarding all-way stops, our staff must conduct a thorough review to ensure the intersection meets the necessary criteria for implementing an all-way stop control. It is important to note that all-way stops cannot be installed as a means to reduce speeds or serve as a traffic calming measure. The primary purpose of an all-way stop is to assign right-of-way at an intersection.

Unwarranted all-way stops can lead to various issues, including poor compliance with stop signs, a false sense of security for pedestrians and cyclists, and an increase in rear-end collisions, among other safety concerns.

Staff will review your parking concern to determine if any changes are warranted.

Thank you for taking the time to review the proposed plan and share your comments.

Churchill Road South, between Queen Street and Orville Street, was previously reviewed, and the findings indicated that traffic calming measures were not warranted. However, another review of this street is scheduled for next year.

Since the discontinuation of the school bus program, staff have conducted multiple reviews at Queen Street and Churchill Road, as well as Queen Street and Tanners Drive. The results indicated that a school crossing guard was not warranted at these intersections. That said, staff will conduct another review in the spring to determine if conditions have changed.

Thank you for taking the time to review the proposed plan and share your comments.

Acton Boulevard, between McDonald Boulevard and Norman Avenue, is located outside the McKenzie-Smith Bennett school zone. Additionally, this section contains multiple closely spaced intersections and a horizontal curve, making it unsuitable for traffic calming measures.

McDonald Boulevard, between Acton Boulevard and Churchill Road North, was previously reviewed in response to residential concerns, and the findings indicated that traffic calming measures were not warranted.

    Thank you.

Since there are stop signs & one way streets at Arthur & Mill, I see pedestrians (especially kids) and cyclists going through here without enough caution. Cars also tend to fly along Peel and while the addition of a speed hump will help, it is further along and doesn't help at that particular intersection. In an ideal world, we would also get a three-way stop at Arthur & Wellington, but perhaps I am biased because I have kids and live right at that corner. If there were stop signs at Peel, Arthur and Mill, cars would be less inclined to use these streets to bypass Hwy 7. I do also see a fair number of people going the wrong way on Arthur and wonder if increased wrong way signage is needed. Is photo radar not a possibility in the area? This is the ultimate deterrant

Jeff Grove asked about 1 month ago

Thank you for your question regarding the possibility of photo radar in the area.

I’m pleased to share that the Town is launching its first portable Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) camera this year, which will be located on Mountainview Road S in Georgetown. However, our current capacity limits us to just one camera at this time.

We recognize the effectiveness of ASE cameras as a deterrent to speeding, and we are hopeful that in the future, we will have multiple cameras fully operational across the Town to expand coverage and enhance safety in more areas.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

    Regards,

    Sebastian Biernat

Why is there no plan for Churchill rd. N? Kids walk home that way and you have the Acton high to consider. I feel that not enough is being done for the perimeter of the whole school. You are only serving the front of the school while more food traffic happens north of the school.

Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your concerns about pedestrian safety around the school, particularly on Churchill Road N.

I want to assure you that we have plans to address traffic safety in this area. As part of our proposed measures, we are planning to install a collector-type speed hump on Churchill Road N, between Tanners Drive and Peel Street. Additionally, the Town has already installed speed humps north of Tanners Drive over the last two years to enhance safety in the area.

If you have any further questions or would like additional details, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
