We received feedback from over 125 survey respondents, who visit the park with varying frequency—from once a month to daily. Most respondents indicated that their primary reason for visiting the park is the playground or splash pad.
Overall, the responses about the planned park changes were positive. Suggestions for additional upgrades included:
Keeping the playhouse
Adding components suitable for smaller children
Installing more swings or offering different types of swings
Adding a water fountain for drinking
When asked to choose between the Jax Pack 4 and the Flux Capacitor, most people preferred the Flux Capacitor. There was a strong preference for maintaining playground colours similar to those already in place.
The updated design incorporates several of these suggestions:
Belt Swings and Tot Swings, including a harness-accessible swing
A play truck that allows children to sit, touch various components, and engage in imaginative play
Colours that are consistent with the existing playground
Reusing playhouse panels from the current structure, and reusing them on the larger existing structure
Addition of a water fountain for drinking.
The proposed design includes:
A large climber called the Physic Moon which is a multi-person climber, with multiple climbing options and features an 8-foot-high slide.
A Maypole, which is a multi-person spinner that will be replacing the beloved overhead spinner.
Swings will be incorporated, featuring an inclusive swing and an additional belt swing.
A sculptural play climber
A play truck that allows children to sit, touch various components, and engage in imaginative play
The proposed safety surfacing will be engineered wood fibre, meeting CSA standards for accessibility. Rubber surfacing is not proposed due to cost constraints.
The Recreation and Parks Department Division is planning the partial replacement of the playground at Dominion Gardens Park. This replacement is necessary due to aging and significant wear on the existing equipment and will make the community park even better.
What's next?
Construction will begin in September 2024 and is expected to be completed within the month. Some additional park upgrades, such as the drinking fountain, may take a little longer to install.
